14th Dalai Lama’s Words of Wisdom Favorite

There are many Dalia Lama’s words of wisdom. Do you have a favorite?

When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.

– Helen Keller

Have you ever done any reading about the Dalai Lama?

The Dalai Lama name is a combination of the Mongolian word dalai meaning Ocean and the Tibetan word བླ་མ་ bla-ma (with a silent “b”) meaning guru, teacher. The Dalai Lama is thought of as the latest reincarnation of a series of spiritual leaders who have chosen to be reborn in order to enlighten others.

The 14th Dalai Lama remained the head of state for the Tibetan government in exile until his retirement on March 14, 2011. He has indicated that the institution of the Dalai Lama may be abolished in the future, and also that the next Dalai Lama may be found outside Tibet and may be female. That is an interesting prophecy don’t you think?

There are many quotes from the 14th Dalai Lama that I like and save to re-read on occasion. This one is probably my favorite:

When asked “What thing about humanity surprises you the most?”

The Dalai Lama answered:

“Man….

Interesting prophecy
Interesting prophecy

Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;

The result is that he does not live in the present or the future;

surprises
Surprises.

He lives as if he is never going to die,

And then dies having never really lived.”

The bottom line

Make your thinking vivid by including what comes naturally to you. For example, you may not be able to imagine sequences of images very well, but you may excel in imagining other modalities such as smell, touch, and sound.

Make your imagination your ally and your best friend.
